OUTSTANDING Vintage PRE CIVIL WAR 1850's Princess Feather Antique Quilt PA DUTCH HEX SIGNS! This AMAZING cotton 1850's red and green princess feather variation quilt is hand appliqued and hand quilted, with Pennsylvania "hex sign" medallions appliqued in the background and in the center of the feather wreaths. Hex signs were a kind of Pennsylvania Dutch folk art popularized in the era, often found painted on barns.
It measures a generous 90" X 90" and is in good condition, with a couple of light age spots and the beginnings of fabric deterioration in some of the red (see photos). The white and green (including the binding) are all intact, and the quilt feels strong and sturdy overall. There quilting is superb, with quilting around and within the applique and in close straight line, clam shell, and ripple designs in the background, all at an even 10-12 stitches to the inch. The back and hand stitched binding are white, and the batting is thin. There is solid green piping just inside the binding. The RARE PA DUTCH DESIGN, DENSE QUILTING, and CLASSIC COLORS make this MUSEUM QUALITY 19th century COLLECTOR'S QUILT stand out!
