An interesting antique unframed Victorian sampler embroidered by Mary Williams in 1888 at Wrotham School, in a naïve Georgian style with a basket of flowers, a cat, a snail, a spider, a candlestick and an umbrella, possibly designed by the young embroiderer herself. It is worked in various stitches with silk floss on linen. Wrotham is a village in Kent and Mary can be found on the 1891 census, aged 13, living there with her widowed father and siblings at 70 High Street where he ran a butcher's shop. It is in fairly good condition with some wear to the embroidery (see photos) and it measures about 13 by 11.25 inches 33 by 29 cm. The photos can be enlarged for more detail.
