RARE 1815 - 1840 QUILT PIECED STARS IN HEXAGONS MOSAIC BLOCK PRINTED FLORAL FABRICS 101" x 91". Among the choicest of old time quilt designs is the large pieced 6-pointed Stars in Hexagon.
This Star quilt is a graphic and visual vintage beauty. Large hand made quilt with concentric rings of hexagons with inner star forms. The white rings in between are magnificently quilted with stuffed work patterns of grapes, etc. The innermost has a different flower basket-type motifs in each hexagon. One print has a dark ground print of the late 18th century; another is a white ground floral also from c1800.
Another may be an 18th century block print. Several dark indigo prints from resist and discharge.
A couple might date right around 1840. The whole is bordered with a sky blue ground, large block printed floral furnishing print. Edge finished with narrow turnover from the back.No repairs, very little stains scattered about. The quilt is totally hand pieced and hand quilted, with chintz fabric pieces and cylinder prints from the 1815's to 1840's. Grapes and curved vining quilting patterns, floral stitching, feather motif quilting, and grid stitching, throughout at 9 to 10 stitches per inch. The stitches are precise and consistent. The binding is turned in and the batting in thin.
The quilt measures a generous 101'' x 91'. Condition: in good unwashed condition, with a old age brown spots scattered about. No rips, and no odors. Some fading to the same material. Three different stars have replaced fabrics indicated by black stitching that shows through to back.
Faint yellow-tan staining areas on white, which are stiff. It appears that someone attempted to bleach the white areas with a poultice procedure which caused a dark blue to bleach where it came into contact and a few other prints were affected. This quilt is a wonderful sewn together work of art. The quilter put a lot of thought into the selections of materials to give the quilt a great visual look. The provenance is very solid.
