It may be difficult to see from the photos, but the pattern is in the traditional medallion style, with an elaborate center flower basket, with tiny corded stems, acorns, detailed flowers, and a cornucopia-shaped basket, with skinny trapuntoed woven strips. This is surrounded by a detailed feathered swag border, then wonderful grapevine & leaf, floral, and acorn & oak leaf clusters. Next is a tight, braided tulip border, followed by more grapevine, floral, and acorn clusters in the field, surrounded with a final, larger tulip braided border. It measures 70" X 82" and is in excellent condition, with a few age spots and surface dirt in places. There are 23 square cutouts in the two bottom corners -- this quilt was made for a poster bed.
There is quilting around the detailed trapunto work throughout at an even, mind boggling 15 stitches to the inch. The back is off white linen, the hand stitched binding is white, and the batting is thin. The photos don't do justice to this VERY EARLY MASTERPIECE of TRAPUNTO WORK -- for the SERIOUS COLLECTOR!
