Please note: I have added 56 photos to the end of this listing to try and show the item in as much detail as possible so please take the time to view them all carefully. This is an antique inlaid wooden sewing box from the Georgian era. The box is made from mahogany with ebony and mother of pearl inlay.
It has a really wonderful shape to it with a dipped in the lid. The lid top has the central vesica shaped mother of pearl inlaid cartouche with two facetted metal knobs at either side. These look like they should hold a swinging loop handle but they don't and they never have done.
They are simply facetted knobs. These stick up just over 1/4 of an inch. Which protrude higher than the shaped wood top. They are quite loose but do not be pushing them in or trying to get them in further due to the MIRROR on the underside of the lid.
It stands on 4 black ebony wood ball feet with an old label on the very bottom corner. You will see it has a keyhole escutcheon of mother of pearl and a small brass lock. When opening the hinged lid you see a full length mirror on the underside of the lid in really super condition. There are a few small areas of black spotting only. Two spotting areas are in the centre from the little finial facetted KNOBS on the lid. It is bordered with a pink silky material between it and the wood frame. As well as the fine silk padded layer on top of the contents tray. This padded silk cushion is frayed and ripe but has done well to survive with the contents. Under the padded cover you then see the really fabulous fine tools and items which are all inset into a cream material. The insets are all framed in a pale yellow paper - card.
The contents include: a hand painted NEEDLE CASE which is in the shape of an ARROW QUIVVER and has gilt or gold metal between the pull off lid and base with a really nice hand painted flower upon it as well. You can see the detail of the maker and the arrow feathers. 2 and 3/4 inch long x 1/2 inch wide x 1/4 inch deep.
A small gilt metal mounted THIMBLE which unfortunately has a crack. 7/8ths inch tall x 5/8ths inch dia. A small 6 pointed star THREAD WINDER which again has hand painted flower on it matching the quiver needle case. A shaped SPIKE tool being 2 and 7/8ths inch long.
Then a small pierced - fretted FLOWER design handle folding tool. The tools inside flick out sideways using your finger nail on the ends. This includes 3 TOOTH PICKS and a small EARSCOOP. 2 and half inches long. The earscoop only measures just over 1 inch long as too are the 3 blonde toothpicks. There is a small short gilt decorated BODKIN needle which measures approx. 2 and a 1/4 inch long. Then the all important SCISSORS. These are polished steel with intricate bead decoration on the handles and little gilt or gold raised flower petal designs on the handles and in the centre of the hinge part on both sides. There may be a makers mark on the inside of each hinge part - but then again it might only be the makers mark to know which part goes with which other part when making the scissors.
3 and 3/4 inch long x 1 and 3/8ths inch wide at the handle end. One of the very tips is SNAPPED off. You will also see 2 circular holes inset and each has a small MIRROR in it. These are 7/8ths inch dia and the THREAD WINDER fits in one perfect. There could well have been another winder in the other one! Next to the mirror holes there is a small rectangular raised padded cushion. This is a PIN CUSHION with a really nice hand painted ROSE Flower on it. It has no pin hole damage.
3/4 inch x 2 inch long. Lift out the TRAY now - the yellow paper around the tray edge is ragged at the ends where people have lifted the tray out from time to time. 7 inch long x 2 and 3/8ths inch wide x just over 1/4 inch deep. Inside is empty and the original pink silky satin interior can be seen. This is in remarkable condition for its age with only a couple of stains. No maker's marks or names on any of the pieces. It is in good collectable condition with some signs of age and use wear. There is some of the ebony inlay missing on the front right corner of the lid and base. There is also some cracking in the centre of the lid where the two little facetted knobs are located.
Other than that it is in remarkable condition. 190mm x 80mm x 60mm - which is is 7 and half inch long x 2 and half inch wide at the base x 3 and an 1/8th inch wide at the widest part of the box x 2 and 1/4 inch tall to the top of the curve of the lid x 2 inch to the dip of the curve on the lid. In the title or description it means. Condition which may have scuffs, scratches and damage.
