Framed French Silk-work Picture Of East India Co. A fine silk-work made in Lyon, France probably in the 18th century. This is a very fine piece with several different styles of embroidering and sewing. The images are delicately sewn with threads in shades of gold upon on a plain black silk ground. Some of the words upon the banner are too worn to read but those that are clear include: Work, Industry and Union (Travail, Industrie, Union) as well as tapestry (tapissier). The banner also reads Lyon and France. Lyon was the largest French producer of luxury silk textiles with approx. 15,000 workers (one third of the population) involved in the silk industry by the late 18th century. The writing and the image suggests this piece celebrates the textiles industry in Lyon and possibly its trade with other countries, especially their trade with the Indies.

The silk-work measures 54.5cm (21 ½ inches) by 44.5cm (17 ½ inches). The frame measures 66cm (26 inches) by 55cm (21 ¾ inches).

The piece weighs 3.95Kg. Some of the words on the banner which are embroidered in a different style to the rest of the work are quite worn. There is a little wear in parts to the main image and the piece has some fading from time and sun exposure but overall the piece is still in a nice condition. The glass free from damage but is reasonably dirty to the underside so the piece would need removing from its frame for a good clean up.

The frame has general age wear and has some paint flecks towards the bottom edge but is in a generally good order. The backing is quite stained and missing some panels. For further details and condition see pictures below...
