A 17th century English Ecclesiastical Stole. The stitching, threads and detail are hallmarks of Elizabethan embroideries. Fine gold and silver wrapped threads couched to silk ground laid on a linen back. Very fine metal purl work, yellow floss outlining floral motifs in split stitch.
The stole has been added to over the centuries:. Later areas of applied 18th century bobbin lace. 19th century metallic tassel ties and replacement silk lining. Considering the great age of this embroidery it is very well preserved.The ground silk has mostly worn away over the centuries revealing the linen backing.
