Ecclesiastical Gold Metallic Embroidered Altar Frontal 17th Century

  
Embroidered altar cloth, English, dating from late 17th Century. Goldwork on silk taffeta, finely worked with all-over decoration, central sheaf of wheat and grape vine motif, repeated in part to left and right-hand sides, with vase, stylised sunflower, and bow motif in between, and connecting leafy stems and tendrils incorporating tulips and other flowers. Antique Condition with appropriate signs of wear commensurate with great age and use.

Some light staining, fabric wear and loss of stitching in places, sometime in the past backed with waxed linen. 251 x 48cm (99 x 19 inches). A well-preserved early piece of high quality goldwork, intended for use as an altar frontlet.

The Christian symbolism is plainly apparent, with ears of wheat and grape vines representing the body and the blood of Christ respectively, as celebrated in Holy Communion.
