Early Turkey Red White Chester County Pennsylvania Bar Quilt 19th Century. This is a lovely early antique quilt obtained from northern Chester County PA near the borders of Lancaster and Berks Counties. Interesting because it shows a melding of influences from this area. I associate the Bar design with being more of a Lancaster County Amish influence, bars were also used by Pennsylvania Dutch associated primarily with Berks County; with the simple Red & White design and white backing, reflecting more of a Quaker influence generally associated with Chester County PA. It's entirely hand quilted and hand sewn.
There is a gorgeous, finely hand stitched vining feather quilted design in the white bars, and a more simple half circle quilting pattern in the red bars. This is all cotton with a thin cotton batting, a thin hand sewn binding on all 4 sides, and a white cotton backing. Has all the signs of a finely sewn Pennsylvania quilt. Bold visual graphic, would be lovely for the holidays, also a lovely accent for many different decors. Condition: Good to Very Good overall with minor signs of age / wear.
This quilt was utilitarian meaning it was used for the purpose intended as opposed to being "put away". In Pennsylvania it was common to layer thin quilts for warmth in colder months, and they certainly could be used year round with less layers in Spring & Summer. This quilt has certainly been washed in it's life time, yet still holds it's shape well. I have not treated it, it's over all clean and without odor. There are a few minor tan spots as shown, along with some minor spotting on the back. The Turkey Red fabric in some areas has small tiny bites of wear down to the batting, (from the tiny darker parts of the dye in the red fabric). The binding shows wear, and for the same reason in the red fabric (shown). It must have been in the sun at some point, there is some fading of the red on the outside bars on both sides. One small approx 1/4- 1/2 split in the white ground. The fabrics and quilt are overall quite sturdy.
Not bad at all considering this quilt is probably 160 -180 yrs old. Measures approximately 82 x 89 inches. Examples of these quilts, especially with an early Turkey Red fabric, are hard to find. Price commensurate to small condition issues. I try to offer just a few quilts with distinction, whether it's early fabrics, unique design or outstanding examples of significance.
