Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Ellen Devonshire aged 9 - 1835. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout, the moreso when one considers Ellen was just nine years old when she completed it. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a central plaque which contains the following verse with Ellen's details and the word Falm'o which I think is probably an abbreviated form of Falmouth which would be her place of residence. Jesus permit thy gracious name to stand. As the first effort of an infants hand. And while her fingers on the canvas move. Engage her tender thoughts to seek thy love.
With thy dear children let her have a part. And write thy name thyself upon her heart. Ellen Devonshire Falm'o Aged 9 Year. The plaque has a bird and two butterflies above, and a carnation bowl and floral bowl down each side.
The middle section of the linen is stitched with an impressively tall fruit basket which has a butterfly to each side of its topmost fruits and a flower basket plus bird, a small dog and floral motif plus bird to its left and right. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a strip of grass which has a steep roofed building standing at the centre with a bird standing on top and containing Ellen's initials and the date of 1835.There are three trees to each side of the building with a dog standing to each side of the central tree which also has a bird on top. The roof of building has a tree and fruit tree to its left and right with a butterfly between each. The strip of grass has a gated fence in front of it, then the whole piece is surrounded by an exquisitely worked deep arcaded floral border. T he linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places with a broken line of damage running across the middle. One is able to see through this that the sampler is sitting on a clean backing cloth. T he sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is some stitch loss to the long stitch stretch of grass and some minor thinning to the areas of the outer floral border. The sampler is contained within an early 19th century hand carved ebonised frame with gilt detail. The frame is in good condition with scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age and areas of age related rubbing.
Measures 12 1/2 " x 16 3/4 " (sight size) and 14 3/4 " x 19 1/4 " including the frame. PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SAMPLER ITSELF.
