I have been collecting these stunning pieces of Arts & Craft era and Society Silk Embroidery for many years. I have gone through my'stash' and have found some to share with you. I have put together some information about Arts & Craft Era see below. Today I have for sale a spectacular Antique Hand embroidered Arts & Craft Era huge centrepiece /mat c1900's, with large raised Red toned Pansies, buds and foliage around the border of this glorious cloth.
The ground is dark cream linen, that also has some pale green hand tinting within the leaves, and stems, with a pale red within the buds and centres : Around the border of the cloth are swirls of red hand embroidery, with more swirls of red/black thin cord too. Expertly and skilfully hand embroidered using silk floss in neat stitches to create lots of interest, and padded stitch to give a raised relistic effect - so stunning : There is also a lovely light cream 7cm or 2 3/4 inch decorative fringed edge to finish it off - wonderful and rare piece of history : Very good Antique condition - Because there is so much embroidery that is so lush and bright, any issues are distracted by the quality of the hand embroidery : The embroidery is stunning - I cannot see any issues : there are some faint marks on the linen - but nothing major or noticeable as such. Some teeny tiny holes, one small hole under a large poppy - hard to see : Some small sections of fringing has broken in a few places - in wonderful condition considering its age!!Note; "The silk thread used to embroider these linens was marketed as colourfast, but great care should be taken in washing these delicate linens as some can still run - greens & reds usually". 94 cm x 95.5 cm or 37 x 37.5 inches Weight 390 grams approx unwrapped. International buyers I will send for FREE. As I do for Australian buyers. I will line this fabulous piece of history with tissue, then cover in a clear sleeve, and triple bag it -to get to you safely. Information I have on Arts & Craft era. Manufactured through good craft techniques. It is a return to traditional craft methods, and romantic forms of decoration. Products were to be manufactured by individuals or small groups rather than on a mass production line. Movements, elements of both those styles are often seen in the patterns. Art nouveau combined flowing ribbons and naturalistic themes.
Roses, violets, carnations and foliage were popular. Exceptions to the "soft and subtle" rule are the bright red strawberries or holly pieces that occasionally.
Society Silk Embroidery 1876 -1930. This style of embroidery (also called Art Embroidery, Silk Art Embroidery, Needle painting, and Silk Work) started in England at the end of the 19th century at the Kensington School and was displayed at the 1876 Centennial. However, it was taken up with huge enthusiasm in America, and soon became a uniquely American phenomenon from 1888 to 1930.
Doilies are most commonly found, but just about any linen could be embroidered in the style, table linens such as tablecloths, napkins, and runners. Many can be found today, a hundred years later, having never been used, only painstakingly completed and carefully stored. Pressed and ready to use.
Note; I will be adding lots more linen - I have a lot of Society silk to list and other treasures in the coming days/weeks! I cannot be held responsible for loss or damage to items after they have been posted.
