Art Nouv. 1900s Irish Crochet & Mixed Lace Wedding Long Overcoat, Pagoda Sleeves

  
This cream-colored Irish Crochet lace [plus other mixed lace] wedding overcoat from the Edwardian era is incredibly well-designed and executed. The overall design has the kind of curving lines for which Art Nouveau is known. It has a mix of techniques that add up to even more than the sum of its parts! It has a sturdy cording covered with buttonhole stitch that meanders through many of the central elements so that the breakage is minimal. There are no sleeve/shoulder seams this was created as a single piece.

The panel under the arms is a tape lace that flares out to give fullness to the coat. The gently rounded neckline has crocheted roses. There are no fasteners on this coat, it could be secured at the neck or chest if you wanted a closer fit or a smaller frame, or left open if you needed more room [or wanted your dress to show]. Down the center front, at the sleeve edges and at the lower scalloped hem is a design of looped trim braid with looped, corded spirals at the end of each loop photo #10, top two photos. The dress has ¾ length bell or pagoda shaped sleeves.

Photo #10, lower two photos show a close-up of one of the flowers left, and on the reverse side, right. The center back has a large crocheted flower [daisy-like] with 7 large garlands with roses at the ends extending from the lower part of the flower. This central figure is framed by a thicker flat braid that looks like leaves filled with twisted threads.

This coat is really a work of art. Please ask for more photos - I have them! I would estimate this item to fit a range of sizes from size small to a larger medium, but please go by the measurements below. NOTE: Measurements are taken lying flat with front edges touching, so please double where applicable: Neck opening [actual]: 19 ¼ Bust: 18 ¼ Waist: 18 Hips: 23 Shoulders Across Back: approximately 15 Sleeve length from shoulder to end: approximately 14 Sleeve length underarm to end: 6 ½ Total length in front (from top of shoulder): 48 ½ Total length in back (from center back neckline to hem): 43 ½ Sweep: 40 [x 2] Weight is 1 lb. 9 ounces, unpackaged Condition is excellent. This was designed incredibly well, so that there are only a few broken brides that I can spot. It is clean and ready to wear, but there are a handful of small tan spots scattered here and there on the coat, some on the inside and some on the outside.

Nothing that is noticeable, and I have not soaked this coat. They would likely come out if you did, but you would risk having it lighten to a white shade, rather than cream.
