This is a very old Welsh tapestry blanket - a plucky survivor dating most likely from the prewar period judging by its dyes and its borders. It is a true antique and as such is showing its age a bit in terms of its dyes fading and bleeding somewhat, but would still appeal to a collector who values these lovely old examples of true Welsh craftsmanship. It features a repeating Caernarfon pattern - that space invader-esque motif that marks out the most traditional of Welsh tapestry blankets. The four colours featured are a light tan brown, a dark brown, a delicate grey/blue and an orange. From what I understand, the style of this blanket - the fact that it is bordered on two sides and hand blanket stitched on the other two - dates it to a time before a new wave of commercial looms came in in the 1950s/60s. The newer looms were able to do fringing and churn them out on a more industrial scale. So in all probability, it is pre 1950s/60s and likely to be very much older. The dyes also seem to be very old and naturalistic - some lovely browny/orangey hues. A world away from the more psychedelic colour schemes that become fashionable in the 1960s! Unfortunately they were not made as colourfast in those days and at some point over the last two thirds of a century, the laundering process has resulted in some dye bleed and also some tightening of the weave. Like all Welsh double cloth tapestries, it is reversible with the lighter tan colour dominating on one side and the darker colours on the other so you can flip it according to your room décor or mood. Blankets like these were historically given as wedding gifts so if you are looking for a present for an upcoming wedding, this might just be perfect. It might also make a great Christmas gift for someone interested in vintage Welsh textiles. SIZE The blanket measures 82 inches by 64 inches or 208cm by 162cm. CONDITION This blanket comes to you in antique preloved condition.
Being several decades (at least 50 or 60 years) old, it means there are some issues as I have already mentioned. I have photographed the main areas of dye bleed/fade.
I have included close up photos of the worst areas and some full shots of the entire blanket so you can see for context how they show up when laid out flat. The weave has tightened owing to washing which you can only expect and hope for at some stage over its very long life! A small amount of blanket stitch has come unravelled - might be a nice job beside the fire on a winters evening or alternatively you could just leave as is.
