An exceptional and large antique unframed mid 19th century pictorial sampler embroidered with coloured wools by Mary Jones, circa 1850 - 1860. The style and materials are typical of the 1850s and another clue to the date is the name of the dogs embroidered on the sampler - Carlo. Carlo was the heroic dog depicted in the children's book, The Life of Carlo, written around 1800 by Eliza Fenwick.Carlo became a popular name for dogs in the first half of the 19th century and features in Charlotte Bronte's novel Jane Eyre, published in 1847. This beautiful sampler is also embroidered with two cats called Favorite, seated on cushions, two rabbits and birds and flowers in vases surrounding a central landscape. It has a dramatic border of fuschia flowers. It is in good condition with no missing stitches and measures 25 inches 64 cm.
