Please note: I have added 57 photos to the end of this listing to try and show the item in as much detail as possible so please take the time to view them all carefully. This is an antique French c1830-50 Palais Royal satinwood vanity box - necessaire sewing box with inlaid polished steel bead work on the shaped lid.It is an unusual shape with a metal stud pattern on the lid. These steel beads and handle have gone dark patina now but would have probably been bright steel colour when new. It has a pretty mother of pearl key hole escutcheon but no key included. Hinge open the lid to see the original mirror under the lid which has a printed paper surround under the pale blue silk corn trim around the mirror.
The 8 items are all inset into the pale blue paper covered top part which has a slight fancy printed paper edge detail. With two silk ribbons to lift out this tray to reveal the tapered compartment below for the "love tokens" of the time. The blue paper does have staining where the clear cut glass scent bottle has been leaking at some time.
Inside is a complete sewing - vanity set which includes a silver thimble, scissors, a cut glass scent bottle, a button hook, a poker, 2 thread winders and another tool of unusual shape which may be for cuticles or similar. The silver thimble is hallmarked as 800 silver. It is bent slightly out of shape. It has 3 other hallmarks on it which are very small and European.
The scent bottle is really beautiful with a tear drop shape. This bottle does NOT stand up, it's made to lay down at all times. It has the finest of cut design and a polished base with an un marked external screw thread top. The bottle neck has a very small flake chip off the edge with no inner cut glass stopper. On one side it has fine engraved wording "Le don d'un ami" which means THE GIFT OF A FRIEND and the cut design has the remains of gilding.
I bet this was SUPERB the day it was made and would have made the box a delight to own. The scent bottle measures approx. 2 and 1/2 inches long x 1 and 14 inches wide x 1/2 inch deep.
The scissors are all steel marked J. Nowill & Sons, Sheffield with their crossed KEYS and STAR and D trade mark.
They are slightly rust stained but have a fancy polished steel handle which is different metal to the cutting ends. 4 and 3/4 inch long. The two fine THREAD winders are a similar shape as you find in larger sewing baskets - boxes of the period. 3/4 inch in diameter at the top x 5/8ths inch diameter at the base. Tapered with the small rod stuck out at the top for winding the thread.
The right hand side one is fairly stiff in the inset hole so be careful when taking it out! The steel POKING tool is on a lathe turned handle and measures approx. 3 and 1/2 inches long in total. The button hook is steel and similar lathe turned handle measuring 3 and 1/2 inches long. The unusual tool made from a cream coloured material has a slot down half of it like a two prong fork and the other end has a rounded edge rather like a cuticle tool. There is slight decoration design at the centre at both edges. It measures just over 3 and 1/2 inches long. The layer of tools lifts up and out and there is storage space underneath. It is in collectable condition with normal signs of age and use wear.
There doesn't seem to be any damage to any of the pieces really. The indent where the scent bottle sits has a stain where the scent has leaked out previously. The box has a few chips here and there, mostly on the edges and corners. The LID has the most wear: the front right hand corner has been slightly restored as it has some inlay missing here and the wood has been coloured. The shape of the lid is rather like a corrugated sheet and the top edges where the wood joins has wear on this line. Please see close up pictures for more details.
7 and 1/4 inches x 5 and 1/4 inches on the top lid x 3 and 1/2 inches. 6 inches x 4 inches. In the title or description it means. Condition which may have scuffs, scratches and damage.
