This framed and dated 1798 sampler measures 17 1/8" tall by 9 3/4" wide. The sampler is an 18th century piece of linen that has been mounted and framed in the early 19th century, thus it has darkened and faded over time, as shown in the photos.

The back of the frame is a solid wooden board, as shown, which has contributed to the darkening of the linen. The girl who wrought the sampler was aged 16 and named Grace Gibson Margret Leis. It states that information at the bottom of the sampler, within the last two lines of verse, as well as the date of 1798. The last number in the date of 1798, the "8", is difficult to see as the frame partially hides it. The frame, which I stated earlier, I believe to date from the first half of the 19th century (circa 1830's-1850's), and is also dated "1798" in gold gilding (paint) at the bottom. The frame has several chips on it, primarily at the corners, but one large chip to the black paint on the right-central side.

The linen sampler has one small hole on the right-central quadrant, which measures about 1/8. The colored threads have faded and discolored over time, and the linen has darkened, as shown. There are several figures depicted within the work that include peacocks with plumed tail feathers, trees and flowers, a dog chasing two stags, three crowns, and several hearts.

It is definitely from the United Kingdom, as there are three crowns displayed within the sampler, an easy to determine sign of British, not American origin. Please review all of the photographs for additional condition reporting.
