Antique (1860) Red Gold Tan Ivory Fringed Woven Jacquard Coverlet by D. Exceptionally fine multi-color antique coverlet is very similar to one in the Art Institute of Chicago collection Heirloom quality coverlet features an attractive medallion and star field design with two corner blocks that identify maker and date, MADE BY D. COSLEY 1860 Beautiful rich colors have retained their original intensity and depth Pattern features four roses framed by ovals that alternate with 8-point stars and is bordered on three sides by classical jardiniere urns brimming with fruits and flowers Coverlet has white cotton fringe at the bottom edge and red, gold, and tan wool fringe on the left and right sides Woven on loom using the Jacquard attachment Full loom width Wool and natural cotton plain weave with plain interlacings of secondary binding warps and patterning wefts (Beiderwand technique) Due to this technique, both sides of the coverlet have the same design patterns - one side features the rich tri-color background while the reverse side features the mirror image on an ivory background Wonderful acquisition for any serious textile or coverlet collection Artist Information: Dennis Cosley was born in 1816 in Virginia. He perfected his craft in Pennsylvania and was well-established in Xenia, Ohio, by 1847. He was very prolific and he created a wide array of woven coverlets and carpets. His earliest pieces contained place info in the corner block, but this practice stopped after 1860. Condition Statement: This antique coverlet has been well cared for and is in excellent condition. The fringe - especially the wool fringe - has deteriorated, as is typical of textiles of this age and type that have not undergone conservation. The white cotton fringe at bottom has held up well, but needs cleaning. Overall, the coverlet is very nice, with minor condition issues as you can see in the high-resolution photographs. Beautiful rich colors have retained their original intensity and depth. We have not cleaned the coverlet, as this is best left to a professional.

However, there are no odors, and there is only one minor spot in the left corner block on the light side of the coverlet. It may be possible that this spot could be removed by professional cleaning. There are two places at top edge where hem has limited fraying. Please examine the detailed high resolution photographs we have included for your consideration. Though we are not antique textile experts, we are happy to provide any additional information or photographs that you may require to make your decision.

Approximate Dimensions: 86.5 "H (not including fringe) x 78.5"W (not including fringe) Wool fringe on side edges varies from none to 2 inches Cotton fringe on bottom edge is 1.5 inches.
