19thC Russian Noble ANNA Princess GOLITSYN PROZOROVSKY Armorial Bedding. Colours may differ due to any flash used. This is the fabulous Rare survivor of the Russian Revolution which killed off many Russian Noble families and all their worldy goods such as this antique late 19th Century BED SPREAD - BED COVER which dates to 1851 - 1921 period...

Our bed is NOT large enough to show this bedspread to its best. This item has been fortunate to have survived its owner and passed down the familes etc... What I do know is... How we are ALL fortunate to be able to see it here for sale.. So many of these sort of things could well have been damaged, lost or destroyed from any number of things... Something as simple as a DOG or CAT jumping onto the bed whilst all this was laid upon it.. It wouldnt take much to destroy such a fine work of art would it.. Then the wars and destruction between the time it was made and now..

Think about the people that created it too... How many times has it actually been laid on a bed or has it spent alot of its life in a drawer... For all of you to browse and enjoy the quality of it... This is the FOURTH and LAST item from this same family Noble Russian family bedroom set.. This bedspread has got the Armorial COAT OF ARMS in the centre as well as the extra full WREATH of GRASSES - TRUMPET shaped FLOWERS - LEAVES - FOLIAGE around it...

All of which are the same as the gathered edge design which is ONLY on the two sides of this bedspread.. Not on the top or bottom of it...

Unlike the pillow shams being all the way around..... Some of you will Notice this is the same design as the square pillow sham... This has a gathered 9 and half inch wide edge and the last inch of this is that same fine LACE edging the same as the pillow shams.....

Of differant sizes within it... Coming back into the bedspread this has a 2 and half inch wide turned over part and then the holes.. But obviously wider due to the size of the item. The Armorial crest on this bedspread is approx 13 and 3/4 inch wide..

From tassell edge to tassel edge x 13 inch long from the top of the crown to the base of the shield.... The work involved in creating this is really fabulous.... It has a slight amount of discolouration - staining.. Centre left side of the crest.. See the photographs which can ALL be enlarged.. Photographs 13 - 14 and 17.

The embroidered WREATH around the crest is 50 inch wide x 38 inch long.. And the work involved in this is beautiful. The linen - cotton bedspread is made from 3 widths of material... The central width is 31 inch wide.. Where it joins the two edges the seams are slightly turned over..

This seam is approx 1/2 inch wide... The two outer widths do equate to 31 inch approx as well taking into account the very edge is turned over 2 and half inch... With the drawn thread holey edge... So the 3 widths are approx 31 inch wide each.. Then of course you have the actual gathered embroidered edge too and the lace edge making the total width of the bed spread 106 inch wide...

See the last photo of the seam. The bottom UNDERSIDE turned over edge has a slight stain.. In the centre of the cover.. Reddy brown staining in a small area... Then the ONLY holes I can see in this item is at the centre...

Just in the plain ground.. These are actual holes and NOT pulls... Which I have mentioned before.. These are deffonate holes in the cotton - linen... Just above the embroidered flowers etc....

See the photograph number 9 which can be enlarged.... Overall this is in really fine antique condition. I have a photograph of my hand in a fist next to the armorial coat of arms to see the scale of the embroidery. Whoever buys this will know how much work is involved in making something as wonderfull as this...

And it being Russian too is an extra bonus. It is a late 19th Century Russian Noble family bed spread made from white cotton or linen lawn which belonged to. The surname Galitzin is often spelt a number of ways, but more often these days like this.... They are one of the oldest and largest Noblest Princely Houses in Russia and can be traced back many centuries and they were closely connected to the Romanov family. The bed spread - bed cover is really wonderfull..

But you will NOT see the beauty of it really on the photographs... Untill you are holding it in your hands or laid out on your bed. It has gathered embroidery edging on 2 sides with a finer lace edging too.. Some of the most beautiful hand embroidery you will ever lay your eyes upon on the finest antique cotton or linen.. It is delicate work but in sturdy condition overall. You will see the plain central cotton has the Armorial coat of arms in the centre.. I will describe that later...

Then the really nice uneven plain weave.. It has a silky sort of feel to it but at the same time being starched like feel about it.. This is how I see and describe it.... Going to the edges it looks to me to be turned over 1 inch or so and sewn.. This one inch has fine HOLES in the sewing and I think its called DRAWN THREAD WORK edging..

The 9 and half inch wide edging is the same type of fabric background with the hand embroidered GRASSES - FLOWERS - LEAVES - STEMS decoration... With long and short stitches... When looking with a loope at this work.. The stitches are so fine.. On the individual FLOWER for instance...

With filled out areas as well as small holes and then longer lines.. With satin stitches on the fuller areas.. A really fabulous texture and accomplishment by the worker.... Then the very fine LACE edging is a slightly darker colour..

It has cute FLOWERS design and small RING like shapes in the pattern as well as an outer edge pattern too and the fine holey edge.... Where this joins the main cotton - linen it is not straight.. With the raised long stitches.. And when you look on the back you can see this is how they have joined the lace edge to the main linen - cotton.... I think this lace edge is called Valenciennes. So now to the central Armorial COAT OF ARMS..

Wow this is elaborate and really well worked.. Please do go to the websites I have pointed out below to see the Joint family arms..

And you will see this is the two families arms. With the CROWN at the top and the shield shape below.. Typical of the European and Russian coats of arms it has a mantle around..

Which looks like a curtain swag with braid and tassell ends.. All this work is hand stitched once again..

With differant stitches to show the devices and design well.. The Prozorovsky arms are those at the two top ones, central one and the two bottom ones.. These include the official emblems of YAROSLAVL the central motif of the Bear holding a long handle axe - SMOLENSK is the bottom left.. The Cannon - KAZAN is the top right hand side which looks like a Dragon & KIEV which is the top left being the Archangel Michael....

Then the two arms in the centre left and right these are the Galitzina arms.. Which include the Grand Duchy of Lithuania.. Thats the one on the left hand side.. Horseman rearing up carrying a sword.... The other arms has a chequered floor which has 2 bears stood up with long pole axes and an altar like thing in the centre..

With a candlestick upon it.... This Armorial coat of arms is 13 and 3/4 inch x 13 inch long. I know you will not be dissapointed with this item as it truly is a WORK OF ART in its OWN RIGHT... This is MORE EXPENSIVE due to the fact it has MORE work on it.... The time and energy in creating such a wonderfull Feast for your Eyes. In overall really beautiful antique condition..

Looking close at the main ground cotton - linen you will see odd areas of slight pulls.. Where the weave has just gaped open slightly.. NOT holes as such from damaged threads etc.. But just where the fine material has been pulled apart to form small pulls. I have 3 MORE items from this same bedding set..

All equally as important and as well made... Same RUSSIAN NOBLE family coat of arms and ALL are listed individually ONLY because in my opinion they are worthy of being in a museum or several collections... The more I research this family and especially Anna.. I want to know more about the lady... I see she was called Anna Alexandrovna Galitzina-Prozorovsky born in St Petersburg in 1851 and married Vladimir Mikhailovich Goriainov in 1877 , they had one child Cyril Gorianoff.... And her title was Princess Galitzine then she died in a Moscow prison in 1921... Was she one of the unfortunate Russian Noble aristocrat Princess's and Princes that were taken as a political prisoner and died during this very unsettled time of the Russian Revolution.......

Why was she in Prison? I have MORE questions about this most interesting lady and if anyone can enlighten me further I would love to know.... What happened to the child Cyril? Check out these following websites to learn a little more of the family and origins etc. And this is an important website to look at relating to the extinct family lines of Prozorovsky and mentions the maternal Galitzine family too..

Make sure you look at both family names. This next one is simply who she married and who her parents were.. Father being ALEXANDER FYODOROVICH, Prince GALITZINE - PROZOROVSKY and her Mother was MARIA ALEXANDROVA, Princess LVOV. Then if you go to this next website it shows her fathers family etc.. To name but a few..

There are many Books written about the family too.. Please see close up pictures for more detail. The item(s) are shown next to an English 1 penny which is 20mm dia for scale. 2.5cm = 25mm = 1 inch. Once an item is the in the postal system any delays are out of my cont rol.
