1789 COCHRAN / COCHRANE Family Interest SAMPLER. Mary Cochran 11 Yrs Old
Very rare sampler worked by Mary Cochran aged 11 years and dated 1789. What look to be pheasants and peacocks at the base. Alphabet and scrolls and what looks like coronets of the peerage. Frame 21.7 inches by 12 inches at widest points.
1789 - George Washington sworn in as president and the French Revolution began with the storming of the Bastille whilst Mary Cochran was probably in Scotland, working in this piece. Possibly because of coronet detail related to the Earls of Dundonald - family name Cochran. Another spelling of the name is Cochrane. Some losses but given it is over 200 years old and not behind glass its not doing badly! Happy to try and answer questions.
