This wonderful textile is an antique French wall hanging, dating from the early to mid 1800's this textile was either painted or block printed or perhaps dyed! And was created in the style of an Aubusson tapestry. This wonderful textile would have hung from a large Chateau wall and was hung using nails. The ground canvas is a woven canvas of cotton and what appears to be a weft of jute or perhaps even a jute and wool mix?
It has a thick looped pile. Very difficult to say exactly. The scene is very typical of the 18th century , and this textile may be earlier , however the ground fabric weave is more typical of the 19th century! The sides have holes surrounded by rust where it was once nailed to the wall and the sides have some splitting in areas This textile uses wonderful autumnal tones. A very rich and grand textile, ideal for hanging or framing for any period home A remarkable find! MEASUREMENTS : This textile measures approx. 71 inches by 49 inches long.
