SMALL MID 19TH CENTURY NEEDLEPOINT OF A CAT ON A CUSHION INITIALLED EB c. 1850
Small mid 19th century needlepoint initialled E. Worked in wool on gauze, this needlepoint is just delightful with neat stitch work throughout. The background of the gauze is stitched in brown with a strip of sage green flooring running across the bottom which has a wonderful image of a striped cat sporting an impressive set of whiskers lying on a red and gold cushion, his tail curled around his body. There is a swagged red and gold curtain framing his right side, whilst the initials E. B are stitched in each corner of the green flooring. The whole piece is then surrounded by a Greek key border. There is a tiny amount of visible gauze in the bottom left corner which has overall discolouration consistent with its age. The needlepoint is behind glass but if one looks at the last photo it shows how the frame's original backing paper has disappeared over time. As such, one is able to see how the colours would have looked when the needlepoint was first stitched and they are good. The needlepoint is contained within its seemingly original rosewood frame with gilt slip. The frame has s cratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age, with an area of deeper scratching to the centre of the top and bottom sides. The last photo is of the reverse of the needlepoint and shows how the frame retains its original hanging ring but has lost its backing paper.
Measures 11 1/4 " x 11 1/4 " (sight size) and 16 1/2 " x 16 1/2 " i. PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE NEEDLEPOINT ITSELF.
