There is a rose beneath the fruit basket which has a butterfly and floral motif to each side. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central Tree of Knowledge, complete with entwined serpent and Adam and Eve standing beneath its fruit laden branches. Each figure has a small black dog at their side, each with a bird standing on a crown above them.
There is small plaque beneath the Tree of Knowledge which contains Eliza's name and the date of'96 and is then flanked by a flower basket. The whole piece is then surrounded by a strawberry border. T he linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, with a few areas of staining and a line running through the name plaque, probably as a result of broken glass. There are also a few very small areas of damage to the field and edges of the linen and a larger area in the lower right corner.
One is able to see through this that the sampler appears to be sitting directly on a stretcher or backing board. T he sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within a later, early 20th century good quality burr walnut frame which is in good condition with a small area of veneer loss on the upper right edge and some scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age. Measures 8 1/2 " x 7 1/4 " (sight size) and 11 1/4 " x 10 1/4 " i. PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE NEEDLEPOINT ITSELF.
