Small early 19th century linen and wool work sampler initialled MJ - c. I will begin by drawing your attention to the last photo which is of the back of the frame.
There is an old label taped onto it which has "Mary Jones 1834" written on it. Whilst the label has been attached at a much later date it could possibly be a replacement for an original one and the style of stitch work would certainly indicate that this piece dates to c. Whether it was stitched by Mary Jones or not, this little sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a central floral urn with a floral motif and blue bird on either side, whilst the middle section of the linen contains a pair of fruit baskets. The lower section is stitched with a central rose basket with a tree and tulip to its left and right.
J are stitched on either side of the rose basket then the whole piece is surrounded by a meandering red line border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places with a small dark stain just above the left side tulip in the lower section. There is also some slight horizontal undulation.
There are a couple of very small areas of damage in the upper section and one is able to see that the sampler retains its original edging cloth. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the wool appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is some stitch loss to right side outer border and a smaller area in the right side tulip in the lower section. The sampler is contained within its seemingly original ebonised frame which is in good condition with some scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age. There is also visible separation on the mitres which is often seen on a frame of this date." across x 9" (sight size) and 11. " x 12" including the frame. PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SAMPLER ITSELF.
