Lendeth unto the Lord and look what he layeth out. It shall be paid him again.
The middle section of the linen is stitched with a central fruit basket with floral motifs, a dog and birds on each side, whilst the lower section contains Sarah's name and the date she was born - March 26. There is a tree birds, crown and floral motif on each side of Sarah's details then the whole piece is surrounded by a narrow floral border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places with a few small scattered areas of damage, some having resulted in the loss of a few stitches. One is able to see through these areas that the sampler seems to be placed directly onto the backing board of the frame. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within its seemingly original ebonised frame which has scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age and retains its original hanging ring. Measures 7 3/4 " x 7 3/4 " (sight size) and 12" x 12".
PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SAMPLER ITSELF.
