Rare Pennsylvania German schoolgirl samplers are chronicled in depth in the book titled, "Samplers of The Pennsylvania Germans", by Tandy and Hersch. The book includes hundreds of pages of pictures and detailed information, and on page 228 it reads.... Although they were not the central focus of this study, (only) 15 SAMPLERS WERE FOUND WHERE THE Penn. GERMAN MAKER REFERRED TO HER ENGLISH TEACHER OR SCHOOL...... FORNEY was one of those 15 documented Pa.

German instructresses (page 289) listed in the important sampler book, operating a school in "1830 (in) MANHEIM LANCASTER COUNTY"......... The 1830 sampler named in the book Samplers of The Pennsylvania Germans pg. 289, stitched at Sarah Forney's Manheim School, was actually worked by Mary E.

She was the cousin of my sampler maker Anna Graybill Diller. Anna was the daughter of Isaac Diller and Susan Graybill and was born Jan. 12,1820 in Lancaster Township. Anna most likely attended Sarah C. Forney's school at the same time as her cousin Mary, as both their samplers name this teacher and are dated 1830. Sampler maker Anna Diller also respectfully stitched, just like her cousin Mary Graybill, the initials of her parents on this sampler I.

German motifs throughout ; including 8 pointed stars pg. 52,60,70,88,222, paired birds, fabulous urns, and a charming berry cartouche surrounding an inscription that reads: Anna Diller's Sampler Taught By Sarah C. Forney In The Year 1830.

Anna married Adam Wenger and sadly passed away after the birth of their children prematurely in 1855 at only 35 years of age (family info included with the sampler). This sampler (appx 18x12) is an opportunity for serious sampler collectors to add a seldom seen, and highly coveted, Pa. German Mennonite example to their collection at an affordable wholesale price point........

A sampler that also is in an even more rarified class, by virtue of the fact that it includes the name of the documented Lancaster Pennsylvania Mennonite instructress. (conserved on acid free board in its old antique brown wash frame)......
