Mid 19th century linen and silk work sampler. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c. Worked by an anonymous hand, this sampler is completely charming with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a central floral spray with a tiny flower basket above, a lion to its left and right.
The floral spray is flanked by a fruit basket and a colourful bird, possibly a finch, perched on a branch. The middle section of the linen is stitched with the following verse which has a crown and flower to the left and right of its title. Hark the roses speaking, telling all abroad. Their sweet loving story of the love of God. In the Rose of Sharon, Jesus Christ the Lord. The first line of the verse has flower basket on either side whilst each side of the verse is stitched with a rose basket, squirrel and butterfly, a floral motif above each butterfly. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central floral motif with a fruit basket, tree, bird and diamond to either side. There is a further central floral motif beneath with a stag, tree, dog and rose basket to the left and right with a cockerel and diamond above each stag. The whole thing is then surrounded by a meandering floral border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age , slightly darker in places with a couple of very small areas of damage in the upper right corner.
The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within its seemingly original bird's eye maple frame with gilt slip. The frame is in good condition with some scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age and a small area of veneer loss to the centre of the bottom edge. Measures 12" x 12" (sight size) and 15.
PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SAMPLER ITSELF.
