Mid 19th century sampler by Ann Pawson. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c. Worked in wool on gauze, this sampler is just delightful with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with a floral edged plaque with a flower bowl and fruit basket on either side and containing the following verse with Ann's name below. Jesus permit thy gracious name to stand fast.

That she who works this may find grace at last. And while her fingers on the canvass move. Engage her tender heart to seek thy love. With thy dear children let her have a part.

And write thy name thyself upon her heart. The lower section of the gauze is stitched with an impressive two storey Palladian country mansion with a garden area to the front which has a tree and floral urn on either side. There is a bird over each of the outer wings of the house with a flower, memorial urn and crown at the side of each.

The gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, paler around the edges from where the sampler has been over a stretcher. There is also a very small area of damage above the top right edge of the verse plaque, The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see its reverse, but the colours of the wool appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years.

There is also bleeding to the stitch work of the words. The sampler is contained within its seemingly original good quality flame mahogany frame which has a great colour and is in good condition with some light scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age. The penultimate photo is of the hanging ring and also shows that the sides of the frame are veneered in mahogany.

The last photo is of the back of the frame and shows that it has a much later backing board. PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SAMPLER ITSELF.
