Mid 19th century sampler by Mary Ann Wilson aged 12 - 1855. Worked in wool on gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns with a row of eight crowns beneath, each with a set of family initials below. The middle section of the gauze is stitched at the centre with Mary Ann's details - the name of her school - Falkland School - and the date of 1855.

There is an open tailed peacock and crown to the left of Mary's details and a stag to the right, each with a crown plus family initials at their side. The lower section of the gauze is stitched with an impressive two storey house which has a tree on either side, a bird and dog standing beneath the left side tree and a dog and rabbit beneath the tree on the right.

The foliage of the tree on the left has a dog and flower to each side with two birds above, whilst the foliage of the right side tree has a bird and deer on each side with a fruit basket above. The whole piece is then surrounded by a deep strawberry border. T he gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, darker around the edges with some slightly darker patches and faint stains to the field. There are also some partly visible tacks along the bottom edge of the gauze. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the wool appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years.

The sampler is contained within its seemingly original stained pine frame which is in good condition with age related splits, scuff marks and scratches commensurate with its age, some of the scratches deeper than others. Measures 16 1/2 " across x 15 3/4 "" (sight size) and 21 1/4 " x 20 1/2 i. PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE NEEDLEPOINT ITSELF.
