Mid 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Phillis Frances aged 11 - 1841. This sampler is just delightful with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with the following verse which has a floral motif surrounded by stars on each side. When all Gods saints are gathered home. And time its course have run. What shouts the ransom'd saints will give.
When Jesus says tis done. There is a small central tulip beneath the verse which has a small bird and flowers to each side followed by a larger bird, possibly a closed tailed peacock, perched on a tree, a star and two diamond motifs to the side of each bird. The middle section of the linen is stitched with a charming two storey house which has a crown over its roof with a bird and star to each side. The house has a lawned area to its left and right, each with a man leaning on his spade with a floral urn nearby surrounded by two birds, a heart and diamond. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central flower basket which has a bird standing on either side with Phillis' details and the date of 1841 beneath. The date has two floral motifs and two birds below followed by a rose basket which has a bird and diamond to its outer side, a floral motif above each bird. The topmost bloom of each rose basket has a cat and dog to its left and right then the whole piece is surrounded by a meandering floral border. T he linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places with some grubbiness in the area containing the verse.
There are also a few small areas of damage and one is able to see through these that the sampler is sitting directly on a backing card. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within its seemingly original mahogany frame which has a rich colour and is in good condition with some scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age.The frame retains its original top hanging ring but has also been strung across the back with wire. Measures 12 1/4 " x across 12 1/4 " (sight size) and 16 1/2 " x 16 1/2 " i. PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE NEEDLEPOINT ITSELF.
