Mid 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Mary Ann Freeman. Though undated, the style of stitch work would indicate this piece dates to c. This sampler is completely charming with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with three rows of alphabet letters, the first tow rows underlined with a meandering floral border and the last row with a deep floral border. The middle section of the linen is stitched with the following verse which has a floral spray on each side and is then underlined with a meandering floral border. Tell me ye knowing and discerning few. Where I may find a friend both firm and true. Who dares stand by me when in deep distress. And then his love and friendship most express. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a row of three large floral sprays with a floral motif to their left and right and two smaller floral sprays above that at the centre. There is a central blue floral edged plaque beneath containing Mary Ann's name with a crown and rose to each side, then the whole piece is surrounded by a strawberry border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with some patches of faint staining from where certain shades of the silk have bled. There are also a few scattered areas of damage in the lower section - by both outer floral sprays - in and around the name plaque and some in the strawberry border. One is able to see through these that the sampler is on a backing cloth, most likely its original.
The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within its seemingly original mahogany frame which has a deep, rich colour. There are some scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age, the most noticeable being at the centre of the bottom edge. The penultimate photo shows the frame retains its original hanging rings, but it has also been strung on the back at some point of time as can be seen on the last photograph. Measures 16 1/4 " x 15 3/4 " (sight size) and 20 1/2 " x 20" i.
PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE NEEDLEPOINT ITSELF.
