Mid 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Sarah Hunt aged 6 - 1856. This sampler is just delightful with fine quality stitch work throughout, the moreso when one considers Sarah was just six years old when she completed it. The upper section of the linen is stitched with two rows of separated alphabet letters and numbers with a crown at the end of the first row, two crowns and a cross at the end of the second and the following verses beneath.
Industry taught in early days. Not only gives our teachers praise.
But gives us pleasure when we view. The works than innocence can do. Jesus permit thy gracious name to stand.
As the first efforts of an infants hand. And as her fingers over the canvas move. Engage her tender heart to seek thy love. With thy dear children may she have her part. And rite thy name thy self upon her heart. The middle section of the linen is stitched with a central church with a dove to the right and left of the cross on top of its central tower, each bird with a green parrot, floral motif plus bird, carnation and bird at their side. The lower part of the church has a flower basket and lion to each side with a butterfly and bird over each basket. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central plaque which contains Sarah's details plus the date of 1856 and has a farmer and his wife standing to its left and right, a dog, floral urn and stag at the side of each figure. The whole piece is then surrounded by a floral border. T he linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly darker in places, moreso in the lower right quadrant. There are several small areas of damage to the linen with a larger area in the upper left corner which has resulted in damage to the stitching of the numbers 3 and 4. One is able to see through the damage that the sampler is sitting directly on top of card. The sampler i s behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is also bleeding to words and other small areas of the dark stitching. The sampler is contained within its seemingly original mahogany frame with gilt slip. The frame is in good condition with some scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age. M easures 12 1/4 " x 12 1/4 " (sight size) and 15 1/2 " x 15 1/2 " i. PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SAMPLER ITSELF.
