Mid 19th century sampler by Elizabeth Davis aged 11 - 1857. Worked in wool on gauze, this sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout. The upper section of the gauze is stitched with a central temple/folly building which has a bird standing on each side of its central dome and another on each of its side pillars. The dome has a star, dog.
Crown, flower basket and floral urn to each side, whilst the pillars are flanked by a bird and large floral motif. The lower section of the gauze is stitched with a central urn which has a large bird, smaller bird, crown and tree to its left and right and the following verse beneath. What children like us have such cause to be glad. What children such means of instruction have had. Such seasons to hear and to sing of the Lord.
Whilst many know nothing of him or his word. The verse is underlined with a row of dog, tree basket, flower, bird and tree motifs with Elizabeth's details and the date of 1857 running across the bottom edge. The whole piece is then surrounded by a deep meandering floral border. T he gauze has overall discolouration consistent with its age, darker to the field and paler around the edges where the sampler is over a stretcher. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the wool appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years.
There is some minor bleeding to areas of the stitch work. The sampler is contained within its seemingly original ebonised frame which is in good condition with impressive age related patina and some scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age.
Measures 16 1/2 " x 15" (sight size) and 20 1/2 " x 18 3/4 " i. PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE NEEDLEPOINT ITSELF.
