Behold the Rose of Sharon here. The lily which the vallies bear. Behold the Tree of Life that gives.
Refreshing fruit and healing leaves. Is he a vine, his heav'nly root.
Supplies the boughs with life and fruit. O let a lasting union join. My soul to Christ the living vine. Beneath his cooling shade I sat. To shield me from the burning heat.Of heav'nly fruit he spread a feast. To feed my eyes and please my taste. Blindly he brought me to the place. Where stands the banquet of his grace.
He saw me faint and o'er my head. The banner of his Love he spread. The lower section of the linen is stitched at the centre with an exquisite fruit basket which has a floral spray and dove in flight on each side of its contents and a small floral motif and bird to the side of each floral spray. There is a colourful bird standing on either side of the basket itself followed by a carnation. There is a floral edged plaque beneath the fruit basket which contains Rosetta Jane's name, that of her school - Blethingley School - (I think this should be Bletchingley) and the date of 1843.The plaque has a floral motif to its left and right then the whole piece is surrounded by a meandering floral border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, with general grubbiness and darker round the edges. There are also several areas of damage, moreso in the upper section and one is able to see through these that the sampler is sitting on paper, darker around the edges with general slight grubbiness and some small, faint areas of speckled staining. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within its seemingly original frame which has been painted with a bird's eye maple effect.
The frame is in good condition with some small chips, scuff marks and losses to the paintwork commensurate with its age. It also retains its original top hanging ring but has also been fitted with side rings at some point of time. Measures 12 3/4 " x 14 1/4 " (sight size) and 15 3/4 " x 17 1/4 " i. PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE NEEDLEPOINT ITSELF.
