Mid 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Harriet Limmer aged 17 - 1846. This little sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with rows of alphabet letters, numbers and border patterns with the following short verse beneath which has a rose urn to each side. Love thou the Lord and he will be. A tender Farther unto thee. The middle section of the linen is stitched at the centre with a narrow plaque containing Harriet's name and age with the date of April 1846 to each side then underlined with a double long stitch diamond border which has a star to its left and right. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central strawberry trimmed archway standing on a grassy hillock. The archway surrounds a Tree of Knowledge, complete with entwined serpent and Adam and Eve standing beneath its fruit laden branches, an identifying initial at their side. There is a fruit tree flanked by a diamond and heart motif to each side of the hillock, whilst each side of the archway is stitched with a rose basket plus two birds, a heart, diamond, fruit basket and tree. The whole piece is then surrounded by a narrow diamond border. T he linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with vertical streaks of grubbiness, mostly in the upper section, and a dark stain in the bottom right corner.
T here are a few small areas of damage to the linen, the largest being in the G in the second row of letters. One is able to see through this that the sampler seems to be sitting directly on backing card.
The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within a simple late 19th century stained oak frame which is in good condition with the odd light scratch and scuff mark commensurate with its age.
Measures 10 3/4 " x 11 1/2 " (sight size) and 12 1/4 " x 13" i. PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE NEEDLEPOINT ITSELF.
