Mid 1800s Old Paisley Shawl, loom woven with cream center. Multicolored warp; mainly Red Background [with] Green, Grey Blue, Orange, Cream, White. The shawl has beautiful botehs and a fringe on either end in above listed shades. The other edges have selvages in green/red.There is a number hand embroidered into the corner 214 25 557. Makers mark or a museum mark? The center is a cream color in a square pattern, with curling fronds at each of the corner. Shawl measures approximately 68 by 67.

They had been catalogued and evaluated [but not priced] at some point and come with the following note pinned to it. Probably made in Scotland [OLD].

The center is a cream color in a square pattern, with curling fronds at each of the corners and a beautiful design at the center of each side of the inner square. Shawl measures approximately 68 by 67, with a little extra for wispy fringe. This is a lovely example of one of the earlier, more rare shawls with light centers. Machine-based looming of these shawls was devised in Paisley, Scotland in the first half of the 19. Century; they had fallen out of favor by the 1870s. There is a large hole at the cream center of 2 ¼, with a few smaller holes nearby. There are 6 8 holes within the red background border ranging from 3/8 to the largest at 1 ½.
There are 3 repairs that I can spot the largest area has two spots darned with light colored thread shown in photo #9 to the right. When held to light, I can see some areas of thinning, but overall, the fabric is pretty strong and clean. Photo #17 shows a small smudge toward the edge of the center. Fringe is wispy and in some places non-existent, one 1 long section missing from one of the selvage edges.
