I have put together some information about this era of Art's & Craft/Society Silk see below. I have for sale an exquisite Panel or Cushion Cover in the'Society Silk' c1900, with wonderful displays of Roses, with buds in colours of Burgundy/red and two Ivory/Pale peach. The leaves and foliage have hand-painted tinting - so effective : This panel is made up into a large cushion cover, but would be easy to unpick if you choose to do this? Oh my goodness, it is still in such wonderful condition considering it's age - over 100 years old! Wow - the work is beautiful. This wonderful piece of history is heavily hand embroidered using a number of different stitches including padded stitch, on a cream linen to the front and has a pale pink open weave linen to the back.
See all photos - business card is a reference to size. Excellent Antique Condition - I can see no issues or damage, some loose threads but everything is still there - the front does not look or feel used? Note; "The silk thread used to embroider these linens was marketed as colour-fast, but great care should be taken in washing these delicate linens, as it still might run".Amazing condition considering it's age - over 100 years old! Measurements; 56cm square or 22 square. This style of embroidery (also called Art Embroidery, Silk Art Embroidery, Needle painting, and Silk Work) started in the England, but was taken up with huge enthusiasm in America, and soon became a uniquely American phenomenon from 1888 to 1915. Society silk embroidery developed as a hobby, almost an art-form, in the early 1900s; its name derived from its favour among "society" ladies. The silk thread was available in hundreds of colours to allow subtle shading on petals and leaves, and in different thicknesses. The style is characterised by highly detailed, finely shaded; botanically correct Floras with foliage. Although many stitches were used, the most characteristic was a completely filled-in version of the Kensington or long-and-short stitch, which allowed gradual colour shading for extraordinarily realistic effects. Pressed and ready to use. Keep watching as I will be listing lots more Vintage Linen and treasures in the days/weeks to come. Most items are I sell are used, second-hand, antique or vintage.
