Frame is 27" x 23" and is 1.5 deep, ready to hang.No glazing/glass on this one. Needlepoint aperture is 20.25" x 16.75" (showing) with fabric-covered filet/mat. 1830-60, Frame is added much later. Her face and arms, hair stitched in impossibly tiny micro-point embroidery, the rest of our Diana (the Huntress) is in petitpoint along with her hounds, and the background is worked in grospoint - all in incredible perfect stitches of silk and wool thread and yarn.
A wonderful depiction in a dreamy palette, Diana's bow across her arm and her half-moon crown in evidence, there's little doubt about who we see here. Her hunting hounds confirm it, and are both splendidly worked. The forest scene looks more like a fine old aubusson woven panel almost - don't you agree? But it's worked in single stitches, 3 sizes, and entirely by hand. This is women's art - relegated to the needle arts, we look to these old panels and tapestry items to see the creativity and style of women's artistry since they were largely absent from other arts like painting, sculpture, architecture.Muted tones in this one contribute to the serenity of the overall composition, as does Diana's slight smile. Very good to excellent condition for age and type, this one has not been covered by glazing/glass, and there are a few spots where a wool stitch has been meal to a moth. You'll see just a slight roughness on the surface of about 15 stitches in various placement throughout the canvas, but they don't stand out - just bear mention here. One of the prettiest needleworks ever, and I almost want to decorate a bedroom just to pull these colors into it. I'm sure if we could open up and see the back, where the original colors of the yarns are not faded by centuries of light exposure, we'd find the colors are far more brilliant an vibrant in the late Georgian to earliest Victorian era fashion, but the faded palette is more delicious for today's decor, no? Frame is a later addition, not as old as is the needlework panel, and it presents it nicely. Our photos are large and clear. We do expect our customers to review them all, evaluate the item based on both our description and our images.
