Fine Georgian gentleman's silver brocade & gold thread embroidered waistcoat dating from circa 1770. Front lined in linen with linen back. Flower motifs and swags on the pocket flaps with the flowers continuing up the buttoned front. Silver and gold metallic threads throughout.
Gold, silver and red spangles & sequins throughout. Size: 28" long; 17" wide at its narrowest (34" in circumference) increasing to 21" at base & 20 under the arms. Condition: This waistcoat is an amazing survivor from 250 years ago and, perhaps not surprisingly, given the fragile nature of its materials is not in perfect condition. The material is a little threadbare on the shoulders and under the arms but is relatively intact in the areas that count - in the embroidered areas down the front by the buttons and around the pockets at the base.
