Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Ann Nordish aged 12 - 1800. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout.
The upper section of the linen is stitched with a central tree which has a bird and flower basket to either side and the following verse beneath. From my beginning may the Almighty powers. Blessings bestow in never ceasing showers.Oh may I happy be and always bles'd. Of ev'ry joy, of ev'ry wish possess'd. May plenty dissipate all worldly cares. And smiling peace bless my revolving years. Each side of the verse is stitched with a tree, dog, two carnations and flower with a bird to the left and right of the word YEAR S. The middle section of the linen is stitched with a central flower basket flanked by a rose, each with a tree and flower on each side, a flower and bird above them. The central flower basket has a bird to each side of its outermost tulip with a fruit basket above each bird. The lower section of the linen is stitched with the following verse which has a tree plus bird, two crowns and a flower on each side. Let sacred writing always be admir'd. Whose holy penmen truly were inspired.
Through all succeeding times both worst and best. They have run down and borne the strictest test. A spirit there in every line we see. Of hope, love, joy and immortality. The verse is underlined with a long stitch triangulated border which has a fruit basket to its left and right and Ann's details beneath - Ann Nordish finished this February The 19 1800.
In the 12 year of her age. There is a central flower basket amongst the lower words with a stag and fruit tree on either side, a black bird perched on top of each tree.
The whole piece is then surrounded by a meandering floral border. T he linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age with streaks of grubbiness, mostly running through the top verse. There are also several scattered small areas of damage and a few larger ones in the top verse, some having resulted in a small amount of stitch loss. One is able to see through these areas that the sampler is on its seemingly original backing paper. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within its seemingly original ebonised oak frame which has scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age. Measures 12 1/2 " x 16 3/4 " (sight size) and 14 1/2 " x 18 3/4 ". PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SAMPLER ITSELF.
