Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Jemima Davies aged 10 - 1833. This sampler is just stunning with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with a charming two storey house with a green front door and green shutters on the ground floor windows. There is a mausoleum to the left of the house with a tree on either side and a fruit basket and bunch of grapes above, whilst the right side of the house is stitched with a fruit tree which also has a fruit basket and bunch of grapes above. This section of stitch work is then underlined with a meandering rose border. The middle section of the linen contains the following verse which has a floral spray on either side. To-morrow Lord is thine, l odg'd in thy sov'reign hand.
And if its sun arise and shine it shines by thy command. The present moment flies and bears our life away. O make thy servants truly wise that they may live today.
The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central tree which has what I think is a sheep and a squirrel beneath its branches. Each animal has a floral urn and flower by their side with a floral urn and butterfly above the motifs on the left and a butterfly above those on the right. Jemima's details, her place of residence - Wellington - and the date of 1833 are stitched beneath then the whole piece is surrounded by an exquisite rose border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, darker around the edges with general grubbiness, moreso down and across the lower left area.
The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is bleeding to areas of the green stitch work and thinning to Jemima's name which makes it a bit tricky to read. There are several areas of damage to the linen which allow one to see that the sampler has been placed on a clean backing cloth at some point of time. The sampler is contained within a mid 19th century rosewood frame with gilt slip, possibly original to the piece.
The frame is in good condition with an old repair to the veneer on both the lower left and right side and some scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age. The slip retains some of its original gilding with a gap between the upper left corners where it would seem that the frame maker cut the left side piece of slip too short.Measures 12 1/2 " x 16 3/4 " (sight size) and 17 1/2 " x 21 3/4 " including the frame. PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SAMPLER ITSELF.
