Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Mary Britten aged 11 - 1827. This sampler is completely charming with neat stitch work throughout.
The upper section of the linen is stitched with an impressive two storey country house with a bird to each side of its central roof and a row of three trees down each side. The steps of the house have a fruit basket to their left and right, whilst the title of the following verse is stitched beneath them. Hark a glad voice the lonely desert cheers. Prepare the way, a God, a God appears. A God, a God the vocal hills reply. The rocks proclaim the approachin(g) deity. Lo earth receives him from the bending skiesy.
Sink down ye mountains and ye valleys rise. With heads decline, ye cedars homage pay. Be smooth ye rocks, ye rapid floods give way. The Saviour comes by ancient bards foretold. Hear him he deaf and all ye blind behold.
T here is a narrow plaque beneath the verse which contains Mary's name, her age and the date of March 1824, then the whole piece is surrounded by a meandering floral border. The linen has overall, quite dark discolouration consistent with its age with some small areas of damage. One is able to see through these that the sampler seems to be sitting directly, possibly glued, on the backing card as shown in the last photograph.
The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. There is some minor bleeding to the green stitch work of the trees on each side of the house and some losses and loose stitches to the crisscrosses of the window panes. The sampler is contained within a later, mid 19th century maple frame with gilt slip. The frame is in good condition with some scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age and slight separation to the mitres.
There is also an old loss to the lower right mitre where one is able to see the nail holding the two pieces of frame together. The slip retains much of its original gilding with some chips and a small amount of over painting along the bottom edge. Measures 11 1/4 " x 15 1/2 " (sight size) and 15 1/4 " x 19 1/2 " i.PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SAMPLER ITSELF.
