Give heed unto her counsels. And store them in thine heart. And all the virtues lean upon her. She is the guide and mistress of human life.
The middle section of the linen is stitched with a charming garden scene comprised of a lawned area enclosed by railings and a central gate. There is a building behind the gate which has a bird standing on top and a tree, stag and fruit tree plus bird on each side, a diamond above each stag. The lower section of the linen is stitched with a central floral garland containing Sarah's name and the date of May 16th 1817. There is a bird standing beneath the garland with a dog, flower basket and a husband with his wife to the left and right.
The whole piece is then surrounded by a deep strawberry border. The linen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, slightly grubby around the edges. There are also several areas of damage to both the edges and field of the linen, but the sampler appears to have been placed upon a backing cloth at a later date which has made the damage less noticeable. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years.
The sampler is contained within a late 19th century oak frame which is in good condition with the odd light scratch and scuff mark commensurate with its age. Measures 12" x 16" (sight size) and 15. PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SAMPLER ITSELF.The item "EARLY 19TH CENTURY GARDEN, FIGURES & QUOTATION SAMPLER BY SARAH MURRANT 1817" is in sale since Wednesday, December 19, 2018.
