Early 19th century linen and silk work sampler by Mary Duffett aged 11 - 1803. This sampler is completely charming with fine quality stitch work throughout. The upper section of the linen is stitched with the following verse which has its six stanzas divided by a floral border then the whole verse is underlined with a meandering floral border.Come children learn this kind command. To love the Lord your God. Love him with all your heart & mind. And spread his praise abroad. Twas his kind hand your being gave.
And form'd you of the ground. And tis the same almighty hand.
Soon as your infant years began. Your life was crown'd with love. And every blessing you receive.
Is giv'n from above. Let your first thoughts by morning light. Ascend to God on high. And in the evening raise your thoughts. He loves to hear your infant cries. Go, like the children of his love. And ask his promis'd grace. To him let your first vows be paid.
He merits all you love. Tell them there's none you love like God. In earth or heaven above.
The lower section of the linen is stitched with a delightful scene of a church standing on a stretch of grass with a tree to each side and a wall to the front which has railings on top and a gate to the centre. The sun is shining over the roof of the church, whilst its clock tower has a floral garland to its left and right containing Mary's details and the date of Jan 22 1803. The whole piece is then surrounded by a deep floral border. The l inen has overall discolouration consistent with its age, darker around the edges with some streaks of faint staining on the top and bottom edges. There are also several areas of damage in the upper section, some having resulted in a small amount of stitch loss to the verse. One is able to see through these areas that the sampler is sitting on a later backing cloth. The sampler is behind glass so I'm not able to see the reverse, but the colours of the silks appear good though they are likely to have mellowed to some extent over the years. The sampler is contained within a later, mid 19th century oak frame which is in good condition with some light scratches and scuff marks commensurate with its age. There is also a split to the centre of the top inner slip and an old narrow loss along the outer upper right side edge. Measures 13" x 16" (sight size) and 17" x 20" i. PLEASE NOTE - ANY MARKS ETC ON THE PHOTOGRAPHS WHICH I'VE NOT ALREADY MENTIONED ARE FROM THE GLARE AND REFLECTION OF THE GLASS AND NOT ON THE SAMPLER ITSELF.
