The FLANGE surrounds the central area on all four sides. The quilt is also shown on a single bed. With the ANCHORS pictured in the fabrics, and under the influence of the the red/white/and blue paintings of Dubuffet, I began calling this quilt the "ADMIRAL DUBUFFET". From New Hyde Park, Long Island, NY.When this CRAZY QUILT was made Queens County and Long Island were sparsely populated and agricultural areas. Since then the urban growth of New York City has swallowed up all traces of that rural past.
This quilt was found in the household that made it on the outskirts of the city where only an artifact like this could hint at the relatively recent and very different nature of the neighborhood. The Central Circular Fan Medallion of Red, Light Blue and Dark Blue Prints are surrounded by various shaped and printed fabrics of Reds, Whites, Blues, Golds, and Grays in a swirling abstract composition - which is itself enclosed and framed by another abstract element --- the Striped Flange. The display possibilities of this quilt are obvious, but it would also made a distinctive throw or single bed cover. The cotton backing makes it comfortable while the wools on top keep you warm in winter cold or summer air conditioned cool.
Use this quilt with another blue and white, or a red and white quilt for a stunning effect.
