A VERY APPEALING QUILT DONE IN A RANDOM PATTERN FEATURING EMBROIDERY AND PAINTED DESIGNS AS WELL AS WOVEN RIBBONS. DURING THE HEIGHT OF THE VICTORIAN ERA, HOMES COULD NOT HAVE ENOUGH EMBELLISHMENT. WOMEN THREW THEMSELVES WHOLE HEARTEDLY INTO DECORATING EVERY INCH OF THEIR HOMES.CRAZY QUILTS WERE THE PERFECT PLACE TO DISPLAY THEIR ABILITIES AS NEEDLEWOMEN AND ARTISTS WITH EMBROIDERED EMBELLISHMENT, PAINTING AND THE EPHEMERA OF NATIONAL AND LOCAL POLITICS. THIS WAS A TRUE FAD AND MANY, MANY EXAMPLES SURVIVE.... THOUGH MOSTLY IN DREADFUL CONDITION. THE REMARKS ABOVE WERE TAKEN FROM AN APPRAISAL DONE IN 2009 BY A. NEWBOLD RICHARDSON, ASA, THE COSTUME AND TEXTILE SPECIALISTS, ALEXANDRIA, VA. INTERESTINGLY, THOUGH MOST QUILTING WAS DONE BY WOMEN, SOME MEN PARTICIPATED IN THE CRAFT AS WELL. MY GRANDMOTHER TOLD ME THIS QUILT WAS MADE BY A FRIEND.... A MALE LAWYER FROM INDIANA. THIS QUILT HAS BEEN, AND CONTINUES TO BE, STORED ON A ROLL WITH A COTTON SHEET TO HELP MINIMIZE FOLD MARKS.
