This is an amazing, complete, antique 18. Needlework sampler by Margaret Wilcock, age unknown (although probably under 10 due to subject matter). Completed by her on July 11, 1795.
This lovely sampler features five rows of alphabet and numbers followed by pious verse and inscription enclosed by a stylized border, worked with dark green, brown, teal and white threads on a wool? Approximately 13 x 10 ½.The stitching is very small. There is none missing that I can see. This Sampler is in excellent antique condition with only a minor stain to the right edge. The featured verse was penned by Nikolaus L. Von Zinzendorf, 1739 (Christi Blut und Gerechtigkeit); first published in the eighth appendix to his Das Gesang-Buch der Gemeine in Herrn-Huth. It was translated from German to English by. Methodist theologian John Wesley, and published in 1740.
On 14 October 1735, Wesley and his brother Charles sailed on The Simmonds from Gravesend in Kent for Savannah in the Province of Georgia in the American colonies at the request of James Oglethorpe. It has been widely-recognized that one of the most significant accomplishments of Wesley's Georgia mission was his publication of a Collection of Psalms and Hymns. The Collection was the first Anglican hymnal published in America, and the first of many hymn-books Wesley published. It included five hymns he translated from German. This is one of several items that I have listed. Please wait for the invoice if you are purchasing multiple items.
