41 Antique PRE-CIVIL WAR Hand Appliqued SIGNED & DATED Red & Natural FLEUR DE LIS Pattern QUILT SQUARES that measure approximately 10 1/2" x 10 1/2". Squares, which have been stored between muslin layers for the past 20-25 years, are in very nice, undamaged condition with expected age spots on some of the blocks. Since there are narrow strips of red fabric at the edges of the blocks, we believe this was originally a Quilt Top with hand stitched red print borders connecting the rows.

Not all names & dates are readable but we are noting the information as best as we can hoping that interested parties will recognize names for family and/or historical significance. Block 1 - Deborah Bye. Nielson - Corner cut from block but does not affect fleur de lis applique.

Block 3 - George Nielson. Block 4 - May 31st 1847 Can't read names in circle. Block 5 - July 1, 1847 Ann -- Leeke Diane Leek. 11 1847 Kennedy (2 names). Block 7 - June 6 August 11 1846 Charles Hinson.

Block 8 - Sarah Bradway. Block 9 - Clark Bradway. Block 10 - John Locke July 7 1847. Block 11 - Bradway (3 names).

Block 12 - Thomas Bradway Sr. Block 13 - Theresa Bradway Richard Bradway June 2 1847. Block 14 - Clark Bradway Beulah Bradway Mar 19 1847. Block 15 - Theresa Bradway May 14 1847. Block 16 - Elizabeth L.

Block 17 - David H. Bradway Sarah A Bradway Feb 22 1847. Block 18 - Benjamin Bye. Block 19 - Martha Luana 1847. Block 20 - Can't read name 1847. Block 21 - Leah L Crewel June 23 1847. Block 22 - Mary --- Smithfield Nov 1847. Block 23 - 2 names - can't read. Block 24 - James Brown Ann Brown May 28 1847.

Block 30 - Can't read name May 17 1847. Block 31 - Ann J Bye Eda Nottingham 1847. Block 32 - Grandmother Jack Harthington. Block 33 - Can't read - very faint.

Block 34 - Arinuth J Brown. Block 35 - Mary J Brown June 23 1847. Block 36 - Charles Carr Susan J Carr 1847.

Block 37 - James R Smith Nancy Smith Smithfield Nov 1847. Block 38 - Rachel M Bye E Nottingham 1847. Block 39 - Samuel Putnam Salem New Jersey November 1846. Block 40 - John Bamburg June 1847. We believe these Quilt Squares originated in the Northeast, most likely in the Philadelphia PA area. This information was provided by a fellow ebayer. I believe your quilt blocks are from Chester County, Pennsylvania.

There are 2 connections also to Salem, NJ - I didn't research all the names. Pls forward this research I did to the next owner, if you don't mind. Born 18 Jun 1814 Salem, Salem Cty, New Jersey died 23 March 1861 Chester County, Penn.

(note that Samuel D W Putnam says Salem, New Jersey). Quaker; wife Sarah L Leeke Bradway buried in same cemetery. Their son Charles was killed in East Nottingham in Chester County, PA (Nottingham was mentioned in association with some Bye names). There is a Deborah M Bye and Amos Bye parents of Enock Martinus Bye 1843 marriage in Nottingham Quaker meeting notes in Chester County, Pennsylvania; They also had a child Benjamin Tilghman Bye b 15 Oct 1821 Chester Cty, Penn. Any circular shadow that may appear at the top of the photos is on the camera lens - not on the item.
