The woolwork dates to the 19th century, circa 1850 and depicts a typical maritime scene of an British frigate at full sail. Creating'Woolies was a popular hobby and pastime for the men at sea, they used it to harness their skills and record ships or scenes that they wanted to remember. A variety of stitches were often used making such a piece a very time consuming activity. We cannot help wonder what experiences the sailor had on his voyage. We particularly like the variety of shades of blue used to depict the ocean. Our example is nicely proportioned within its antique frame with a gilt slip, it is ready for display. The black frame and the gold mount really complement each other. This is an original, aged example, that's gentle fading give it THE look that is so popular right now; it will display excellently in any setting. Examples such as this are becoming increasingly hard to come by, this is a unique opportunity to own a sought after antique artwork from the 19th century. All images are taken in natural English daylight, please ignore any reflections on the glass. Measuring: Frame width 20.5 inch (52 cm) by height 16.75 inch (42.5 cm). Aperture width 15.75 inch (40 cm) by height 12 1/8 inch (31 cm). Condition: This is a genuine antique example that is not pristine.
It has signs of age and gentle fading that one would expect to see on a 150 yr old plus wool textile. There are some light patches of historic insect damage. Some sections of the string rigging have come loose. There is evidence of dust and trapped debris below the glass as is so very common with sailors woollies.
0.25 inch vertical section to left side slightly brighter in color. The frame has some light surface wear with a repaired section to the top right corner. New backing board and hanging cord to the reverse of the frame....
